New views on pain in hospitals
As of 2015, the Joint Commission (an organization that provides accreditation for over 21,000 healthcare organizations around the country) now recognizes that both pharmacological and nonpharmacological strategies have a role in relieving a person’s pain. And, acupuncture is the first nonpharmacological intervention listed! This is a remarkable step for The Joint Commision to not only take into account the risks involved with opioid drugs but also to recommend drug-free alternatives. Consequently, we will see more physical modalities, including acupuncture, in hospitals and other healthcare settings.
Acupuncture and other modalities to be considered FIRST for pain management
Although pharmacological strategies are effective for pain, the nonpharmacological interventions listed are noninvasive with minimal risk, nonaddictive, and can be just as effective as traditional pain medications (both prescribed and over-the-counter). Other drug-free therapies listed include: chiropractic, massage, and a few others. At Simpson Family Wellness, we provide all three of those modalities.
